I don't think cops here even do this. I take it a checkpoint stops all cars? I've never seen that in my decades in MN. We have frequent notices (last one was on 3/17) on our highway info signs that say "Increased DUI patrol" or similar, no actual checkpoints.

    In NC last year:

Officers set up more than 2,300 sobriety checkpoints and dedicated patrols across the state for the Highway Safety Programs Booze It and Lose It campaign Oct. 29-31.

Of the 774 DWI charges issued, Wake, Mecklenburg and Pitt counties were among those with the highest number of arrests. Fifty-two people were arrested in both Wake and Mecklenburg counties; and 42 people were charged in Pitt County.

Officers also issued 1,203 seat belt and 262 child passenger safety violations, 5,565 speeding violations and 405 drug charges.

In addition, they arrested 242 fugitives and recovered 19 stolen vehicles.

So forgetting the fact that they caught some drunks, they also caught criminals and junkies as well as dicks who can't drive.

    That's a bonus.

Yeah, this is pretty exciting news. I had already planned to call Verizon this morning to see when my contract is up.

EDIT: $175 termination fee per phone and a good while to go on the contract. Yeouch! I may just have to keep my fingers crossed that Verizon Wireless gets the iPhone late next year.

Yeah, the termination fee is harsh, but I'm honestly not sure I could last another year and a half without throwing my Razr into a trash compactor. I like the phone, but the god-awful interface that Verizon loads onto it is another story.

A cell phone should NOT require hard reboots.

attempts to unify the TV and the computer have been done for the last 15 years or so without success. I give Apple a less then 10% success. Even if they succeed, the definition of success here is greatly compromise to a point of failure.

    Cinch

But with every attempt, the chance of success increases significantly. Lets keep our fingers crossed. :)

    Lame.

The only way the iPhone market even makes sense is via an Apple MVNO.

Since when does Apple NOT want to "control the whole widget"? I don't want Apple controlled by the nutjob mobile providers.

As much of an Apple fanboy as I am, I would never use Cingular. But beyond that, it signals that the Apple iPhone will be incredibly lame -- just another music phone (basically an Apple ROKR/SLVR), because that is pretty much all that Cingular trades in.

Reading is so fundamental. It said "Quad-SLI-capable". Where in the article did it say it was in an SLI configuration?

Reading is really fundamental considering the fact that you can't even read two paragraphs worth of an article you posted:

"These two, combined with SLI, they will let you play something like Far Cry at a ludicrous 2160p resolution."

since Apple lost their claim as the producer of the biggest LCD monitor in the market (30 inch behemoth), maybe Apple will use this event to announce 42 inch Apple Cinema Display.

and what happened to that Apple patent for thousands of small camera embedded on the LCD?

MBP update is very likely, but you won't see Macbook update. processor is limited in quantities and obviously computers with bigger need for faster processor, which is MBP, will be where chips go.

and maybe in this event Apple might present with Adobe for Adobe's upcoming universal softwares.

i don't think Apple will just announce Aperture if they are going to invite guests for a presentation. more than that is coming. maybe Apple projectors. i don't know.

but I know for sure that G5 powerbook is not coming so losers better not cry for that.

First, $100 million is load of money for anyone. Time was, not so long ago, that reporting a $100 million quarterly profit was a big deal for Apple. The iPod doesn't "make" $6 billion a year for Apple. That's just revenue. Profits are a faction of that revenue.

This might be a valid point, except that the $100 million payout isn't being charged against profits. Instead, it is being recorded as an asset and ammortized over many years, meaning it will have very minimal impact to the bottom line.

Second, Creative doesn't "give up" anything but a license to Apple for technology Apple was using before for nothing. No matter how you cut it, the license fee come right out of Apple's bottom line.

I believe this is incorrect. Just because Apple is paying the fee doesn't mean it comes directly out of Apple's profits. As stated above, the licensing fee will be ammortized over several years and thus the impact to the bottom line will be nil.

Secondly, the fee is conditional. If Creative manages to secure other licensing deals, they pay Apple back some of that $100 million. Perhaps all, if the other fees are substantial. That sounds more like a "loan" to me.

If this can be called a "win" for Apple, it's in their getting this issue squared away relatively quickly, so it doesn't overhang the next generation of iPod releases. The long-term impacts of allowing the suit to drag on could have been considerable, just as it was for RIM. Especially if in the end, they lost.

No disagreement with this. The only thing is that NTP never agreed to pay RIM back part of its licensing fee if it was successful in securing new licensees. And NTP didn't decide to become a maker of Blackberry add-on devices.

By officially becoming a member of the "Made for iPod" program, Creative is basically unofficially pre-announcing that it is exiting the player business (contrary to official denial, which are necessary in order for it to sell of remaining inventory). Zen's lost huge marketshare against Sandisk, of all companies, and there's no way Zen will hold on to what little marketshare it has with Zune entering the scene. Not to mention that "Zen" and "Zune" are phonetically similar, which all but guarantees the situation will be hopeless for the Zen line of players.

Creative realized it makes more sense to extract licensing fees from Microsoft for Zune than try to compete directly as it had against the iPod.

With that exit strategy tucked under its belt, it's now free to focus on creating great iPod accessories, which will require far less R&D than music players, and will actually be profitable.

Apple "lost" all right. Here's a summary from The Motley Fool

    Apple Gets Creative (http://www.fool.com/News/mft/2006/mft06082410.htm)

What's more, Apple is allowed to recoup costs if others agree to license Creative's patent. Will there be other deals? It's a good bet Creative will try to secure some; the $100 million the firm is getting from Apple will juice per-share earnings by $0.85 in the current quarter.

Plus, there are plenty of targets, with the biggest and most obvious being Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT). Its planned Zune player is expected out before the holiday season. Creative could get ahold of a beta version of the device and, if there's evidence of a patent violation, file suit and petition for an injunction.

Apple would love nothing better, of course. But even if Mr. Softy and other i-wannabes avoid the courts, they're unlikely to avoid the extra time and expense of working around Creative's patent. That, too, is a win for the Mac maker. Well done, Steve.

This is what would be called Pyrrhic victory for Creative. Sure, it looks like they won the battle, but only at such a cost that it ends up being a defeat in the long term.

    Aurichie,

Thank you, for your comments. You make some very valid points. I don't really know much about this whole cloud storage thing. I suppose I really need to read up on that. Is this just another name for something like the commercials I am hearing a lot lately about a company called carbonite? Just an offsite storage method that we pay a yearly fee for? If so, then I could certainly see a real benefit to something like that. I currently have over 132GB of iTunes media. I know it's a lot. I have a huge number of audio books, an even larger Podcast collection and a pretty good amount of music. I will have to look into this cloud storage and see what it offers. Thanks again.

I'm simultaneously amused and saddened by the number of people who believe that drunk driving is a constitutionally protected right.
Hope you never have to see the results of the 'patriots' who would have a use for this and then kill innocent people.
This app enables murder. Rationalize all you want.

Nobody said that drunk driving was a constitutionally protected right. The ability to tell someone how to drive drunk is a protected right. It may not be one that you agree with but taking away that right would be a slippery slope of banning speech that people could find potentially dangerous.

And guess what -- Safari enables you to learn how to do all sorts of things that can lead to murder. You know what, I suggest you stop using your web browser right now -- you're in danger of becoming a murderer!

couldn't apple develop something into itunes that lets you watch while it is downloading? is this possible?

    It already works that way:

    http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/movies.html

Shop the iTunes Store for hot new releases such as Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and download them for $12.99 the week theyre released on DVD. Or buy Disney library titles for $9.99 to $14.99. All your favorites are here: The Princess Diaries, The Incredibles, Cinderella, Toy Story, The Rock, The Rookie, and more. Search for movies just as you would for music, and watch a free trailer before you download. Or, if you cant wait for the next blockbuster to hit shelves, feel free to pre-order upcoming releases. iTunes will let you know the minute theyre ready to download. Cant wait to start the show? You can even watch your movie as it downloads.
