Unless you were actually commenting on the "pre-announcement" itself and not the codename
Yes, it was the "pre-announcement" that I find very un-Apple. The fact that the product doesn't have a solid name just adds to the strangeness. Is there a precedent for this at Apple announcements. Sure, I've heard of products that I couldn't go out and get today or even for 4 weeks, but Q1 2007?
This seems to me the "plan b" that had to get announced because the real "one more thing", out of left field announcement, hit a snag.
Maybe it wasn't the iPhone, but something didn't go exactly a planned on the 12th.
Anyone hear how they liked the satcast of the keynote in London?

Whoopidedoo, a whole $50 off. They HAD to do that because of the lack of actually updating anything worthy on the device. One could argue that it isn't enough of a price cut the way competitors music players are priced.
Anyone with half a brain will avoid these 5th G Part 2 devices like the plague, unless they want to waste money that could be spent 4 months later on a widescreen model.
Should we set up the thread now for the people that rush out and buy this version of the iPod then get burned just after Christmas when the real new iPod comes out? They'll need someplace to vent, and it's usually all over these threads. It would be nice to condense it.
My thoughts exactly.

Several news outlets are confirming (http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/09/05/showtime/index.php) the media event that Apple is holding on September 12th 2006.
More details of the event were released to day when Apple sent out invitations to select media members. The invites says "It's Showtime":
http://guides.macrumors.com/images/1/18/Apple_showtime.jpg
First word of the event leaked out (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060831122800.shtml) on August 31st, with multiple reports of a media event to be held in San Francisco. Today, the digital invitations were sent out confirming the event and setting a time and place.
The announcements will take place at 10:00am Pacific time at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in downtown San Francisco. Based on the title of the invitation, it appears likely that the long rumored Movie Store will finally be released.
Businessweek recently provided (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060831122800.shtml) some early details of the service, which they claim to offer movies from $9.99-$14.99. Meanwhile, Appleinsider feels (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060904194920.shtml) a new video streaming device will also be introduced. Meanwhile, Core 2 Duo iMacs (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060901123538.shtml) and new iPods (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060904073025.shtml) are also expected.
If you have access to this media event, please contact us (mailto:webmaster@macrumors.com?Subject=Showtime Event).

Geez, I hope it doesn't look like that. Rotary looks kool, but imagine trying to text or dial without looking.
Yeah, seriously - there's no way!!!
Text Messaging is way too popular now to mess with the key layout.
Really, the only viable options are:
1) standard numeric keypad
2) QWERTY keyboard
3) Hybrid QWERTY keyboard (a la Blackberry 7100 or Blackberry Pearl, though RIM probably has a patent on this...)

The mock-up looks cool - definitely something that I could see Apple designing. It bares quite a similarity though to LG's Chocolate phone...
thats because they knew apple TelePod was about to come out so they dumped their on the market first

Looking at the figures right now anyone can easily see that iOS is not the dominating platform. Not even the second most popular (which is Symbian), but does anyone really care ?. Same case with the Macs and Mac OS X.
I would really like to see Microsoft step up the game because in the end, we customers are the ones receiving most benefit.
I had been a loyal Windows user (up to Windows 7) when I switched to Mac last year. My take is that Windows and its creators are not technically inferior to Mac OS and Apple, but their corporate philosophy has never sported the acumen and, guess what, common sense with which Steve Jobs makes the his products so pleasant to use and look at.
I'm with you 100%, I just wish Apple would focus better on development languages, frameworks & environments. XCode4 is wonderful, but objective-c and the apple SDK libraries suck. Microsoft really wins with .NET where things are just logically placed and powerful. Apple SDK, however, you have some libraries that are in C, you have some that are in Objective-C, you have some that use a mixture of both. It feels like they glued crap together last minute, but never cleaned it up. This is actually why a lot of powerful software for the MAC is unavailable outside of already C-compiled programs like photoshop, etc. Take for instance Quicken, no good Mac alternative period. When I decided to develop it myself and make millions (joke), I realized that it would take me twice as long to develop a decent mac application because I had to design around memory management, etc that you simply don't worry about in .NET. Databases, etc, PIA. Yes, I understand it requires developers to think ahead, but it also means decent software for the mac requires teams on top of teams to develop thus software still sucks on the MAC outside of what Apple had their 10-man teams build in over a year (ie iWork, etc)

Some people said the same thing back in 2009 when analysts said that Android would overtake the iPhone by 2012 (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=662706). :D
Nobody said that back in because there were no Android phones to speak of. This of course changed in and pretty much everyone with half a brain knew that Android would overtake iOS in market share eventually through sheer availability of handsets and carriers. Maybe 3 people on this forum would deny it, but who cares about them.
Now this story is a bit different. Nokia WP7 handsets aren't even announced yet. Most likely they won't have one this year. Instead there are many things that can go wrong. So far, WP7 has been a let-down. And every day they don't catch up on the competition makes it less likely that the platform will succeed.

I'm not sure that this is an entirely novel thought, but I thought I would test my psychic abilities a little.
The mac mini seems like the target for movies here, not iPods. There's a lot of talk about Airport express and how that might be the killer hardware, but there's more to it than that. Apple is competing against rental stores and netflix to watch movies. No one is just going to want to watch movies on an iPod, they are going to want it on they're TV. So why not have a network box that saves and plays the movies that is attatched to your TV? The mini is already positioned to do exactly that. No keyboard or monitor, maybe just a remote to run Front Row.
Download the movie to the mini, watch it on TV at your convenience. Mac video on demand. Start doing that with TV shows and all of a sudden, Tivo has got a serious contender, too.
The hard bit will be having full-quality movies sent to your home, VOD style.
The new iPod is a phone. There may be a video ipod, but I doubt that it's a main target for the movies.
I have this wonderful feeling that it'll be even cooler than this, but this is what I am expecting.

Minimum wage needs to be increased, national healthcare needs to be implemented and tax holes closed. This country would be in a lot better shape as far as it's lower classes go, imo.
We need unions to protect people from abusive BS like this (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/12/walmart-contracted-warehouse-workers_n_848262.html). Either that or we just need to have a limit on how big a company can get before it has to become the property of the employees.
My answer: Walmart needs to be destroyed.. and bringing their blood-thirsty corporation to their feet is what I have planned for them.

I like to see some benchmarks against G4 machines and see if they make me pull the credit card out.
They've done that in this benchmark, tho only on the Speedmark test:
Speedmark 4.5 scores are relative to those of a 1.25GHz Mac mini, which is assigned a score of 100.
If you go by that, the new iMacs are about 2.5x faster.

Whatever happens, and no matter how stupid I think this lawsuit is, I hope Samsung get a stinker on their international image where people think they are some cute Korean company. As stated many times in this thread, they are the biggest conglomerate in the world and could swallow Apple whole. Hell, they could swallow Venezuela whole, and maybe even Canada. In Korea, they even run the government through many arms.
Comparing an electronics company (Apple) to a freaking giant lizard conglomerate that owns everything and (a little and) electronics, is as stupid as can be. In the age of the internet, why not read a little, first, and then comment on that shytebag murderous bloated tax-evading totalitarian regime known as Samsung.

That is the problem I'm seeing too....the bandwidth. Everyone is screaming about HDDs. Hello, storage is cheap. I just see the carriers salivating at the idea of Apple wanting people to stream. I do see and understand that some people can find this new setup useful. However, a LOT of us see a major problem in terms of data charges. If Apple still gives the storage capacity in its devices as it does now, then I personally will NOT have a problem with this. I would prefer to have it stored locally. Cellular data connectivity is no where where it needs to be for me to happy with it as a replacement for local storage. Nah uh...no way. With my music, video and pictures, I have 3 running copies at any given time and this has worked out for me for many years. Why fix something that isn't broke?
when you are at home turn on your WIFI...
why is this concept so hard to grasp?
you are a different kind of user. 3 running copies at once?? you rely way too much on physical stuff....so obviously this won't be for you.

"Media Device" = Does it include an iPod Video?
This would somewhat explain why the Paris Expo was given the cold shoulder.
"Bonjour, mes amis! The iTunes Movie Store is finally here! (but only in the U.S.)"
This way, they announce the store but also get a chance to demo the product at the Expo.

TV shows are US only, but I doubt Movies will be US only. That would be like music being US only? TV shows are a different animal.

Because they are NO LONGER USING THE API! They give the rights to use the API to call and display the image. It doesn't give them the right to take that image and use it for something else outside of the context it was meant to be used.
Let me quote Gruber on this very issue:
"Point 1 is simply wrong; the Airfoil Speakers Touch iPhone app does not contain any of these images. It contains no pictures of Apple computers. It contains no icons of Apple applications. It displays these images after they are sent across the network by Airfoil for Mac. Airfoil for Mac reads these images using public official Mac OS X APIs. I.e. Airfoil Speakers Touch can only show a picture of the Mac it is connected to because the image is sent from the Mac it is connected to."

I live in Nevada and honestly the cops spend more time Giving tickets out then doing real police work. Since the state has been financial hardship, The cops are out drumming up business. Honestly, do you think someone who is Drunk is going to be checking the app for the checkpoints? Its just an excuse to get rid of these apps from the store and increase revenue. Apple dont bend to the pressure, These apps do not break any rules for the App store and if you start letting the Government decide what should and shouldnt be, is the day I finally Jailbreak my Iphone.

Sorry if someone already mentioned orange in this thread. I just came along and couldn't be bothered to read the entire thread up to this point.
ORANGE!
Personally, I'd love a true blue or navy blue one.
