The only time a full version is needed is when a new computer is purchased and then the price for Vista is completely different because of the OEM pricing by the vendor.
Not so much "different" as hidden from the ultimate consumer.
I think you're also forgetting that the current version of OSX is included with every Mac.

They should do a commercial with the Mac and PC guy. The Mac guy can have an iPod the PC guy a Zune. Enter cute girl. She gets an earbud from the Mac guy as she smiles looking like they might start making out. PC guy gets that dude in a dress asking, "Did you get it? I don't get it!"

I don't get why everyone is complaining about the icon in the dock, all they changed was the color of the eighth note. It wasn't that big a deal.
That's not true. Unlike the last couple revisions to the icon, the look as a whole also changed. The CD/DVD is different, the lighting is different, etc. I do prefer the old icon.
That said, I think this new version of iTunes is amazing! Who really cares if the icon is not my favorite? The features are fantastic! And I like the look of the actual interface a lot.
I get excited about updates like this because they are free! Computer updates are great, but I can only afford one every few years. iTunes I use everyday, and it's free.:D

I would be slightly worried about jailbreaking an iPhone 5 then. Sony might claim ownership of the damn thing and sue you for doing so.

I'll wait for the Media Centre Edition to ship - that's one of the "super secret" parts of OSX 10.5 that hasn't been shown.
Could you expand on this? What will the Media edition add to the pot? Thanks.

So what happens when the owner of the MacBook closes the computer?
The computer goes to sleep, I suppose. If the attacker has installed something like a rootkit on the computer before that, the MacBook will still be compromised when it wakes up.

Doesn't matter. I think the script they were using was broken anyway. I tried to enter my affected serial number a bunch of ways and it wouldn't accept it. My guess is that they took the site down to fix the issue.
Or it could be because the story hit the front page of Digg :)

Yea, the page is probably digg****ed as well as being destroyed by MacRumors, AppleInsider, Engadget, TUAW, Think Secret, Slashdot, etc.

What about the iPod OS? Isn't it on the hd, like the Nomad Jukebox of that time? I had one of those and it was easy, if expensive, to find hd larger than the original already formatted including the OS.
I believe that the core of the iPod OS resides in firmware. A bit of research reveals that after replacing the drive as seen here (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/iPod-Classic-Hard-Drive/564/1), putting the iPod into disk mode and restoring with iTunes will reinstall any missing pieces.
Apple hates physical buttons. No Apple device in the past ten years has ever moved backwards in the drive to eliminate physical buttons.
Button to open laptop display? Gone.
Latches for batteries? Gone.
Trackpad button? Gone.
Physical buttons on the iPod? Six.
Buttons on iPod Touch? Two (Four if you count the volume.)
Buttons for ejectable drives? Never existed.
Dude, you will never again see physical buttons for these things on an iDevice itself.
Why buy new if you intend to void the warranty? This is something I'll probably do in the coming few weeks myself. I think 1.8" HDD development's more or less plateaued as well.
Unfortunately, you are probably right. Though it would be nice to see one last revision of the Classic, I have a feeling that this is the end of the line. Also, a good point on the buy used bit. I tend to forget that the Classic is still two years old as is and used models are readily available on eBay, etc.

This is great news unless it's automatic patches which mess up the jailbreak...
Automatic, without user authentication would not make sense. Apple has never issued updates or installed anything without user interaction. That would open the OS up to security risks. So, it wont be automatic.
Over 3G? No thank you. Wireless on WiFi is fine.

Yes, I know that they are two different categories, but the MBPs would definitely steal a lot of the iPad's thunder.I doubt a new MBP announcement will hurt the iPad in any way. I think only an inconsequential percentage of Apple's iPad customer base would change plans for an iPad and choose a MBP instead.

Does anyone know if they resolved the issue of updates 'caching' on the App Store...i.e still showing the number of updates available badge even though they have been downloaded and installed???
Yes its fixed! I updated, had 5 apps in store to update. Updated, badge gone!

I'm often surprised to meet a new Beatles fan who "inherited" their interest from their parents. And the publicity surrounding an iTunes debut would add to that interest.
I wonder if they'll have a "complete catalog" package?
Granted, for new fans might be a good thing. I wonder how many new fans the Beatles have nowadays? Plus, their parents might have the songs already on cd or lp. and of course you can always go to your local cd store and buy their music.
Sorry, I don't think adding the Beatles is a big deal at all.
The only thing it might be interesting is to buy their whole complete catalog of songs just like Apple did with U2 Complete for a good price.

Only go there when absolutely necessary, and shower after. BTW, I read somewhere of some people who every time they go to Walmart accidentally break/damage/spill something.

I just received my Mac Pro and started opening it up to see how it was put together. I wanted to know what parts Apple used. A Sony super drive and a Seagate SATA hard drive. I am adding pictures as I take them. More than what I posted before.

Well spoken, blitzkrieg79.
It is amazing to me that otherwise intelligent people parrot the corporate line that its simply not possible to manufacture products domestically and remain profitable. Do people really think that $80 name brand shirts, $140 shoes, or the $2500 computers being made on the other side of the planet are being sold at a price anywhere near what it actually cost to make? C'mon.
Why is it every time a company moves manufacturing overseas, we never see a reduction in the price?
If Apple was just barely squeezing out a profit and scraping by, holding on by their fingernails, I'd buy their line about needing to manufacture practically everything overseas, but we're talking about a company that makes absolutely enormous profits.
So Apple simply can't afford to manufacture here anymore? Well, how much profit did Apple make last quarter, again? Haha, sure, right.
It's business never personal, corporate sock puppets doing what they do.

Yes, it is. The screw has always been there. I will say that ours is no longer flush like it was at first. Brushing your hand over it means you feel the screw whereas in May we could not. So, the screw may be more noticeable if this is true for others, as well. I could see it being very annoying for some.
Just got my mabook back from getting its optical drive replaced and the service centre have also replaced the heat sink (i never mentioned RSS at all so not sure why they did it). I have noticed the central screw is no longer flush now. not a huge problem but does this mean the new heatsink causes the screw to stick out a bit?

I thought no one cared...
Exactly. One reason why I've tuned out a little from news threads over the years because they're often filled with a relentless tide of a) people who haven't got the slightest clue what they're talking about or b) assume that because they have an opinion about something, that everyone else shares it, including people who don't post on tech forums.
Tip-toeing and cherry-picking through the chaff to find those who've got something of value to add and something we can all learn from can be a time-consuming affair.
Regardless of your musical tastes, why anyone who proclaims to care about Apple's success would begrudge them expanding their catalogue to include one of the most influential bands of the 20th century... well, it's a complete mystery to me.

I'm curious. Just how "slow" (transfer speed) is the wireless on Zune?
slower then handing over your earbud.
