Alternative temporary plan is buy the refurb 1.83 GHz MacBook for $949 now then sell it for about the same when the 2.33 GHz Merom MacBook Pros ships. I would think any almost new MacBook will sell for the same price as refurb or worst case $50 less until the Merom MacBooks ship - which could be at the same time as the MBP but more likely by November. :)
I don't want to buy and sell for a month use.
If the chip is comeing out on staurday (23rd) doesnt that mean that they MBPs will chip the 7th? seeing as how the chip would already be out...

Which is probably why they sued. Knowing they are running out of cash, they figured "Let's jump on the bandwagon and sue someone".
If you believe that, then please give me a valid reason why Apple settled for 100 million...

Great news.
I wonder if the price for SSD storage will be more reasonable?
They have been "tweaking" this design a bit over the years, making it thiner, and reducing the size of the chin. (and going from Plastic to Aluminium if you really want to push it as technically, those early iMacs had the same design.)
I think a big redesign to a drafting table/upright convertible style iMac is somewhere in the future, but OS X Lion is probably not the OS it will be running.

This is a great start for Apple and should help sway studios that are still on the fence. Doesnt mean I'm biting though, only thing that'll get me to seriously think of buying a movie would be nothing less than a 720 x 480 reso. I might get impulsive if there are more offerings. Maybe.
I think Apple should seriously consider offering rentals too. Its dumb not to try it out :)

I think the big problem with rentals is that Netflix has it wrapped up right now. You can get a ton of movies for a monthly fee, and I don't see any way an online service can compete with that, at least not without losing money on it.
If you know your best effort won't compare well to Netflix, does it really make sense to try and do it anyway? Or is it smarter just to stay out of such a cutthroat marketplace?
Netflix is great, but it's not ideal. They offer too few foreign movies. The wait times for new releases can be phenomenal and some movies that they should be stocking, they aren't.
The only real future for online movies is by renting them. I'd pay up to $3 per rental but have no desire to keep a movie. If I want to watch it again, I'll rent it again.

Nobody wants the 24". That's why they stopped making it. It was useless.
Sure it is useless; I've been using one for what, 2 years now? ;)

Someone needs to bookmark this thread so we can come back to it in 2015.
No we don't. We just go back to 6 months ago and see what they incorrectly predicted.
Predicted 2014 Market Share (http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/forums/viewthread/79242/)
Symbian: 32.9%
Blackberry: 17.3%
Android: 24.6%
iOS: 10.9%
Windows: 9.8%
Other: 4.5%
Today's guess:
Symbian: 0.2% (change: -32.7%)
Blackberry: 13.7% (change: -4%)
Android: 45.4% (change: +20%)
iOS: 15.3% (change: +5%)
Windows: 20.9% (change: +11%)
Other: 4.6%
Even accounting for the Symbian/Windows "merger", their predictions aren't even worth reading.

All of you W7 humpers please try and "snap" two excel or word files next to each other. Oh that right you cant, because heaven forbid I would want to do that and work simultaneous on two MS office files.

Have I missed something?
As far as I can tell, we haven't actually seen an invite to this media event, so how do we know it's actually going to happen? If Apple are having trouble with some of the proposed releases, what's to prevent them delaying till later in the month or even early October?

Unfortunately, cats are known liars.
They're purposely getting our hopes up just to let us down. It weakens us. Humbles us. After hearing no announcements tomorrow all we will do is sulk around, giving us more time to give them more dried food.
They're still pissed about the MagSafe connector... that ruined things for them.

H.264 isn't really that much data.
The Wildlife 720p HD stream from Apple is less than 3000 kbits/sec. For comparison, the Pixlet demo is like 27 mbits/sec. A 1080p h.264 stream is less than 10 mbits/sec.
So with those numbers, a 720p stream with 5.1 audio should easily stream over even a 10 mbit network device. So I can easily see this working over 802.11g.
Now the only issue is what they are going to put in the device to decode the streams with. Forward compatibility with future codecs would be nice.

Sure is. A hypothetical I like to propose:
Considering that the discrepancies between "rich" and "poor" as far as voting goes are far over blown (http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/10/24/even-more-on-income-and-voting/) (Rich DO vote liberal and poor DO vote conservative) with the top third of white income earners STILL voting liberal, despite their high incomes and the ever-pervasive myth that rich people vote republican.
If this top third of income earners, instead of trying to legislate their charities through democratic votes and the force of law, simply put 50%, 60%, 70%, hell, 90% of their incomes towards charity rather than owning a home, owning multiple vehicles, owning boats, "traveling", shopping at Lunds or Kowalskis, etc, the poverty problem would be fixed, or at the very least, helped significantly without forcing ANYBODY to do ANYTHING.
But then again, these people would rather force everyone to pony up the dough rather than take a hit to their lifestyles.
Charity is a beautiful thing, but forced charity?
Oh, good... I was wondering when the "Screw you, I got mine" crowd would come out of hiding.

If you tie this story to the recent news from Michigan that cops there are able to suck the data off of your phone at a traffic stop, then this is really frightening.
You can get sucked off at a traffic stop by a cop in Michigan? Must make sure I never go to Michigan!:D

Most likely. I'm not a betting person, but Apple usually rolls out new pro machines during these types of events and what better way to show off the MBPs running C2D than a demonstration of Aperture 2.0. :)Yeah I agree. This is likely the time and place for the MBP C2D - Finally.

What about the Robson flash technology. That sounds like the greatest thing since a laptop with a palmrest on the bottom and an "upside down" logo.
of course that would be useful and by all means wait another year if you must, but personally i'd rather just buy now and then upgrade later as if it's really that amazing then the sockets are still compatable and an easy upgrade.

Yeah, considering we get so many posts about "Will this RAM work?". It seems like the populous is clueless about DDR/DDR2 and FSB.
Exactly. Which is why the Ghz myth will stay for a long time. You can't market Memory or FSB or SATA or PCI-X/PCI-E, you won't get anywhere.
Ghz, GB, "X times faster", and you can play games that look very pretty. Those will be what computer marketing will be all about for many years to come.

Instead of increasing the driving age, what about requiring more logged hours with a parent whit a learner's permit, manditory quality driver's ed, and making it harder for unsafe drivers to get their licence? Then require a one year driving check up a year after the licence was attained?

The article you are quoting was published two years ago....
Oh you are right, i didn't really check the date. But am sure it's somewhat related to this, since Woo was to invest some serious money to win the market, and now he has the serious money he needs.
100m is still a massive amount of cash, but only roughly 1/100 of Apples total cash. And Apple has gained a couple of things too like the 'made for iPod' logo on their No.1 competitor, which only standardizes the iPod even more.
Also the most important thing they gained is that they are now 'co-owners' of the patent. And when Creative decides to sue somebody else for patent infringement (Zune), Apple will join the fun too and am sure in that case they'll get most of their money back.

I hope it isn't O2, that would be a shame. To be honest, any network lockins would be bad.
My vote would be Orange if I had the choice.
I've found that through expansys.com and mphone.co.uk i can get anything sim free, sometimes even before it's launched on the network.
that's how i got my current smartphone.
i REALLLLLLLYYYYYYYYY hope its orange...
as the choice of mobile phones they have at the moment is the poorest i have ever seen in the UK.
ive been waiting on a p990i since march.....still dont have it on orange, was told yesterday it could be end of october now.
i am gauranteed a free upgrade on any handset, so come one apple!!
I got fed up waiting for the P990, and ended up getting a free upgrade to the SPV M600. I wasn't a fan (read "I loathed") Windows Mobile until I got this phone. It's fantastic.
The only thing the P990 does that the SPV doesn't is video calling. And, to be honest, I've got a lot of friends with 3G phones, and not a single one has ever used the videophone feature.

You would not have said "What on earth is an app store?". You would have said "Where is it?" because you would have known it is a place that sells apps/applications. Why? Because it is descriptive. And that is the point of the argument.
It looks descriptive to you because there is an App Store for your Mac and there is an App Store for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. If Apple hadn't invented the term "App Store" and used it for its super successful site, you would never have heard the term, and you wouldn't know what it means.
Applications are a type of program. They have been called so since the dawn of time.
When you take some facial cream and put it on your face, that is called "application". When you take some abstract idea and turn it into practice, that is called "application". When you fill out a form to get a passport, that is called "application". "application" is a word with many meanings.
